About

John S. Adams, M.D. is Distinguished Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is co-appointed as Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine in the Geffen School and Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology in the UCLA College of Arts and Letters. Dr. Adams is Director of the Orthopaedic Hospital Research Center, where he is charged with building an interschool (the UCLA College and Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Engineering), multidisciplinary program of training and research in developmental and regenerative musculoskeletal medicine. Dr. Adams also serves as Associate Director of the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute and Assistant Dean for Translational Research where he is charged with building
translation research teams.

Dr. Adams’ bench-to-bedside (translational) and clinical research efforts in the area of vitamin D have been continuously funded by the NIH for the last 34 years. These efforts are currently targeted at understanding 1] the concerted role of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins and heat shock proteins in hormone-directed chromatin remodeling, transcription, transcript splicing and miRNA regulation of mRNA handling, 2] the role of vitamin D in the human innate and adaptive immune response, and 3] the contribution of human vitamin D insufficiency to states of immuno-insufficiency and abnormal skeletal and energy homeostasis. Most recently Dr. Adams has extended his translational research endeavors to the development of a chimeric therapeutic of mesenchymal stem cells (exogenous and endogenous) and a biodegradable scaffold embedded with bone and cartilage cell morphogens in the treatment of human fragility fractures.

Dr. Adams has a long and successful track record in training undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students for careers in translational research under the auspices of extramural funding from the NIH. This includes high school, university, premedical and graduate students as well as Ph.D.s, M.D.s and M.D./Ph.D.s. In the last five years 18 undergraduates, 13 graduate students and nine postdoctoral students have spent time in his laboratory and/or clinical research program. In addition, he is currently mentoring five junior faculty holding NIH-supported career development K awards, three in Orthopaedic Surgery, one in Medicine and one in Dentistry.

Dr. Adams serves as Associate Director and Chair of the External Advisory Council for the Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training at UCLA (BEST@UCLA) which seeks to develop new career planning and professional development activities for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars that will complement and supplement their research training, inclusive of non-academic careers. As such, the BEST@UCLA program will prepare bioscience PhD-holders, the majority of whom do not remain in academic research, to enter the non-academic workforce through four such “nontraditional” career pathways: 1) Public Policy, Regulatory Affairs and Communicating Science; 2) Science Law, Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer; 3) Science Management and Therapeutic Development; and 4) Frontiers of Medicine.
