About

Dr. Catherine Sarkisian is a geriatrician and research scientist committed to working on projects aimed at improving quality of life of vulnerable older adults. Through conducting community-partnered research in the greater Los Angeles region for the past 13 years, she has built a strong network of community partners who trust her and are eager to continue collaborating. She is the Director and Co-PI of the NIA-funded LA CAPRA (Los Angeles Community Academic Partnership for Research in Aging) Center. LA CAPRA is a new NIA-funded (RC4) Center based in the UCLA Division of Geriatrics that represents a union between UCLA/Drew, the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging, and Partners in Care Foundation. LA CAPRA's mission is to establish a permanent infrastructure that will maintain a real-world ethnically diverse urban "community empowered testbed" for translating research findings into practical community-based interventions with the goal of creating sustained meaningful improvement in the quality of life of lower income older adults.  Dr. Sarkisian is also the lead faculty member for community liaison efforts of the NIA-funded UCLA Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR). She has a growing track record of leadership, evidenced by her national service with the American Geriatrics Society Research Committee, being PI of an NIA RO1-funded RCT of a behavioral intervention to raise walking levels among older Latinos (¡Caminemos! clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT00183014), and her role as Assistant Director of the Research Training Core of the NIA-funded UCLA Older Americans Independence Center. As a co-Investigator in the UCLA CTSI, she will provide expertise that extends beyond recruiting vulnerable older adults to research projects and actually engages this hard to reach group to participate in the design and conduct of research. Through LA CAPRA, Dr. Sarkisian will also serve as a critical link between the CTSI and the Los Angeles senior centers.
